Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Huzhou, China, the Cipo Laoling Residence stands as a testament to architectural innovation and a deep reverence for nature. Designed by Jumping House Lab and led by architects Tiantian Wang and Yanqin Luo, this captivating settlement spans 3711 m² and was completed in 2023. Surrounded by lush greenery, a tranquil pond, and picturesque mountains, this retreat offers a unique blend of modern hospitality within a natural haven.
Inspired Design Philosophy
The architectural concept behind the Cipo Laoling Residence draws inspiration from the surrounding village and renowned works of architectural masters. Divided into 16 abstract white houses, the settlement echoes the organic growth of nearby villages while paying homage to architectural icons such as Louis Kahn and Tadao Ando. The design narrative emphasizes decentralization, flexibility, and a seamless integration with the natural landscape.
Thoughtful Spatial Organization
The spatial organization of the residence reflects a meticulous attention to detail and functionality. Divided into two groups – the west and east wings – each section serves a distinct purpose while maintaining a cohesive design language. The west wing comprises guest rooms arranged in a sequential structure, offering privacy and tranquility. In contrast, the east wing features a radial layout, housing vibrant communal spaces that foster social interaction and community engagement.
Warmth in Materiality
While the exterior boasts a minimalist white facade, the interiors exude warmth and texture through carefully selected materials. Solid wood, textured plaster paint, and warm-toned terrazzo create a welcoming ambiance in guest rooms, restaurants, and cafes. Supplementary materials such as bamboo-patterned panels and stainless steel sheets add depth and character to circulation spaces, striking a delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality.
Seamless Integration with Nature
The Cipo Laoling Residence blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting guests to connect with nature at every turn. The multipurpose hall features expansive openings that dissolve the barrier between the building and its surroundings, offering breathtaking views of the landscape. A zigzag pathway connects guest rooms to public areas, weaving through scenic vistas and outdoor gardens, enhancing the overall guest experience.

The completion of the Cipo Laoling Residence marks the culmination of a five-year journey, punctuated by challenges and triumphs. Despite the global pandemic and evolving client requirements, the project remained true to its initial vision, thanks to the dedication and resilience of the design team.
