In 2023, AK Architecture Studio undertook the renovation of “Beyt el Sayde” (House of the Lady), a penthouse located in the Sayde neighborhood of Beirut, Lebanon. Situated atop the Ashrafieh hill, this penthouse replaced an old rooftop that had been damaged during the war, breathing new life into the urban landscape.
Embracing Nature and Heritage
Upon entering the apartment, visitors are greeted by a lush green patio that serves as a transitional space between the urban environment and the interior. Offering panoramic views of Beirut’s bustling cityscape, the sea, and the majestic mountains, the patio sets the tone for the rest of the dwelling. Acting as a central hub, the patio divides the living, dining, and kitchen areas from the family quarters while maintaining a seamless connection. Trees within the patio create visual continuity throughout the living spaces.
Reinterpretation of Tradition
Inspired by traditional Lebanese architecture, the penthouse features lofty ceilings that accommodate a mezzanine level housing an architectural office space. This elevated vantage point offers sweeping views of the surroundings while maximizing the patio’s framed vista. The design pays homage to Lebanese heritage through the incorporation of three wooden bay windows reminiscent of the country’s triple arcades, adding a touch of nostalgia to the modern dwelling.
Preservation and Integration
A key design principle of the renovation project was the preservation and reuse of old tiles from the original structure. These tiles, infused with vibrant colors, adorn various living areas, reflecting traditional Lebanese aesthetics. Beige tones dominate the floors and walls, while dark red accents highlight doors and fixed furniture. Wooden bay windows and radiators feature shades of green and gray, adding depth and character to the interior.
Inspired by Tradition, Designed for Today
The patio draws inspiration from Lebanese “Kiosks,” historically used as enclosed balconies for observing street life. In a modern twist, the patio is recessed into the house, serving as a visual focal point that invites residents to immerse themselves in the heart of the dwelling. By blending elements of tradition with contemporary design, AK Architecture Studio has transformed Beyt el Sayde into a timeless sanctuary that celebrates Lebanon’s rich cultural heritage.
