Preserving Heritage: The Transformation of A4 Art Museum

In 2023, TEKTONN ARCHITECTS undertook a significant renovation project in Cheng Du Shi, China, focusing on the A4 Art Museum nestled within the Luxehills community. Situated atop a small hill, Luxehills boasts a picturesque suburban landscape inspired by Tuscany, offering residents and visitors alike a quaint setting to explore.

Embracing Cultural Significance

At the summit of Luxehills, three pivotal structures overlook the community: the club, the church, and the A4 Art Museum. As a cultural centerpiece, the A4 Art Museum underwent renovation as part of Foxtown’s regeneration initiative, aiming to celebrate the community’s vibrant culture in a modern and respectful manner.

Harmonizing Old and New

With a total exhibition area of 5,000 square meters, the museum’s original building was divided into three above-ground and two underground floors. TEKTONN ARCHITECTS approached the renovation with a commitment to preserving the building’s integrity while seamlessly integrating new elements and functions. The design aimed to respect the existing architecture while addressing modern needs.

Minimalist Renewal

The renovation strategy focused on minimal alterations to the original facade, optimizing exhibition circulation, and addressing structural inconveniences. New volumes were introduced in a modern style using steel plates, offering a stark contrast to the surrounding stone buildings. This approach aimed to create a neutral modernity that coexists harmoniously with the existing architecture.

Functional Simplicity

Internally, the design prioritized functionality, employing simple volumes to enhance the fluidity and utility of the space for future exhibitions. Rather than imposing symbolic gestures, the focus remained on creating clear and differentiated spaces that embody a sense of timeless modernity.

By blending tradition with innovation and respecting the heritage of Luxehills, the transformation of the A4 Art Museum stands as a testament to TEKTONN ARCHITECTS’ commitment to preserving cultural identity while embracing contemporary needs.
