In 2023, Cong Sinh Architects undertook the extension of a house located on a bustling commercial street in Hue City, Vietnam. The project involved transforming a narrow tube house into a cohesive living space that fosters meaningful connections between its occupants, nature, and the built environment.
Creating Family Bonds
The house, originally built for a family of three comprising an elderly couple and their daughter, sought to strengthen familial bonds through thoughtful architectural design. The ground floor was reconfigured to accommodate the needs of the elderly couple, ensuring privacy and easy access. The kitchen-dining area became the heart of the home, facilitating interactions with regular guests and fostering a sense of community.
Nurturing Connection with Nature
Despite its location on a busy street, the house was designed to embrace nature. Oriented to capture cool breezes from the Southeast, the building features open living spaces that allow for natural ventilation and ample daylight. A concrete louver system and strategically placed skylights optimize natural light while providing protection from harsh sunlight and rain.
Providing Sanctuary and Security
The house serves as a sanctuary, offering its residents a quiet and secure retreat from the outside world. Constructed with local black stone, the building exudes a sense of familiarity and permanence. The interior spaces are designed to promote relaxation and restorative sleep, contributing to the occupants’ overall well-being.
Fostering Sustainability and Connection
In addition to its architectural features, the house incorporates sustainable elements such as edible plants and fish bowls, adding greenery and vitality to the living environment. By nurturing these living elements, the residents develop a deeper connection to their home, fostering a sense of care and stewardship.
Promoting a Fulfilling Life
The 99 Mai Thuc Loan House exemplifies how thoughtful design can enhance the quality of life for its inhabitants. By harmonizing relationships between people, nature, and the built environment, the house creates a nurturing and fulfilling living experience. Through this project, Cong Sinh Architects aims to inspire a holistic approach to design that prioritizes happiness and well-being, regardless of the scale of the dwelling.
