Ephemeral Prefabricated Pavilions Enhancing the Athens & Epidaurus Festival Experience

Located in the vibrant city of Athens, Greece, a series of Ephemeral Prefabricated Pavilions designed by FLUX office add a contemporary touch to the historical setting. These pavilions, spanning an area of 440 m², were erected in 2023 to enrich the artistic events of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, taking place at the iconic Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

Design Concept and Functionality

Led by the innovative team at FLUX Office, including architects Thanassis Demiris, Eva Manidaki, Efthymios Dougkas, and Ramin Antoniadis, the pavilions serve as versatile spaces to support various festival activities. The design ethos revolves around principles of transparency, lightness, and harmony with the surrounding monument.

Architectural Features

Comprising five independent structures, the pavilions are strategically positioned to cater to different needs. The Central structure, nestled amidst ancient walls, houses dressing rooms, offices, and storage spaces, while also providing cover for staircases leading to the basement area. Four additional structures, akin to “satellites,” accommodate functions such as the Ticket Office, a Shop, and two Bars.

Material Selection and Construction

Wood and light metal frames form the backbone of the pavilions, chosen for their aesthetic appeal and synergy with the adjacent stone monument. The modular structural system allows for adaptability, with designs ranging from solid panels to pleated-folded configurations. Translucent polycarbonate sheets enhance natural lighting, while maintaining privacy for occupants.

Unique Design Adaptations

Despite following a common set of construction principles, each pavilion boasts a unique design tailored to its specific function and location within the square. The Central element, serving as the main pathway for the audience, features integral components such as the Ticket Office and Bars at its extremities. The centrally positioned Shop stands out with a pleated façade, offering an expansive storefront to showcase festival programs and merchandise.

Conclusion

FLUX Office’s Ephemeral Prefabricated Pavilions not only provide essential support for the Athens & Epidaurus Festival but also contribute to the cultural landscape of the city. Through innovative design and meticulous attention to detail, these structures seamlessly blend modernity with ancient heritage, enriching the festival experience for visitors and locals alike.
