In 2022, Branco Cavaleiro Architects undertook a significant project involving the rehabilitation and expansion of Casa Alpuim (also known as Casa dos Agorretas) located in the heart of Viana do Castelo, Portugal. This landmark building, believed to have origins dating back to the 17th or 18th century, is a neo-Manueline urban palace.
Historical Preservation and Adaptive Reuse
Aligned with the regulations governing the Historic Center of Viana do Castelo, the project aimed to restore and repurpose Casa Alpuim into multi-family housing while preserving its architectural heritage and original elements. The rehabilitation efforts focused on reviving the building’s grandeur while retaining its distinctive characteristics.
Restoring Architectural Grandeur
The exterior facades underwent meticulous restoration to conserve all original elements, ensuring the preservation of the building’s historic appearance. This endeavor not only revived a culturally significant structure but also revitalized the surrounding urban area.
Thoughtful Interior Intervention
Internally, the architectural intervention prioritized the preservation of original construction elements such as skylights, vertical accesses, marbled walls, and plaster ceilings. Concurrently, improvements were made to enhance the building’s thermal and acoustic performance, ensuring a comfortable living environment for residents.
Harmonizing Tradition with Modernity
Throughout the restoration and expansion process, materials and construction techniques were selected to align with the historical context and character of the buildings. The existing structure predominantly features wood construction, while decorative plaster was used for ceilings and skylights, maintaining coherence with the building’s era.
By seamlessly blending historical preservation with contemporary functionality, Branco Cavaleiro Architects have successfully breathed new life into Casa Alpuim, transforming it into a vibrant hub of multi-family housing while honoring its rich architectural legacy.
