Embracing Heritage in Modernity
‘Beyt el Sayde’ (House of the Lady), situated in the Sayde neighborhood of Beirut, Lebanon, stands as a testament to architectural revival amidst urban renewal. Overlooking the Ashrafieh hill, this penthouse, designed by AK Architecture Studio, replaces an old rooftop ravaged by war, breathing new life into its surroundings.
Green Oasis Amidst Urban Landscape
Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a lush patio, a verdant sanctuary bridging the urban hustle with serene interiors. From here, one beholds Lebanon’s defining elements: the vibrant cityscape, the azure sea, and the majestic mountains, all harmoniously intertwined.
Spatial Harmony Through Nature
The patio serves as the heart of the home, seamlessly dividing public and private realms while fostering connectivity. Towering trees within the patio visually link living, dining, and kitchen spaces, preserving an organic flow. This reinterpretation of traditional Lebanese dwellings, with lofty ceilings and a mezzanine housing an architectural office, celebrates spatial fluidity.
Honoring Architectural Legacy
Resonating with Lebanese architectural heritage, the house boasts three wooden bay windows reminiscent of triple arcades. Old tiles salvaged from the original structure adorn living areas, echoing vibrant hues of beige, dark red, and green/grey, infusing the space with warmth and character. The patio, inspired by Lebanese ‘Kiosks,’ reimagines traditional balconies, creating a captivating visual focal point within the home.
Conclusion: A Fusion of Past and Present
‘Beyt el Sayde’ exemplifies architectural innovation rooted in heritage. AK Architecture Studio’s meticulous renovation breathes new life into historical elements, marrying tradition with contemporary design. This harmonious blend of old and new serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Lebanese architecture, offering a timeless sanctuary amidst the bustling urban landscape of Beirut.
