Restoring Harmony: 108ERA Renovation of a Farmhouse in Granera

In 2022, Vallribera Arquitectes embarked on a restoration project for a century-old farmhouse in Granera, Spain, aiming to transform it into a welcoming retreat that celebrates family gatherings, embraces sustainability, and seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living.

Embracing Family Traditions

Situated on a serene plot with lush woodlands beyond, the farmhouse serves as a cherished destination for family reunions and leisurely Sundays. The restoration project sought to enhance the property’s appeal as a multi-generational retreat, where memories are made and traditions cherished.

Blurring Boundaries: Indoor-Outdoor Living

The restoration preserved the farmhouse’s historic charm while enhancing its functionality and connection to nature. By creating three large openings on the south facade, the boundaries between the interior and exterior spaces were blurred, allowing natural light and fresh air to permeate the living areas.

Modernizing Traditional Elements

While honoring the farmhouse’s heritage, modern amenities were seamlessly integrated to enhance comfort and sustainability. The installation of a barbecue and fireplace at the threshold between indoor and outdoor spaces transformed it into a focal point for family gatherings and leisurely meals.

Thoughtful Spatial Organization

Inside, each room was carefully designed to serve its unique function, from the kitchen and dining area near the entrance to the secluded living room for quiet relaxation. The first floor retained its original layout, with bedrooms arranged to accommodate family members of all ages.

Sustainable Practices

The restoration prioritized sustainability, utilizing local materials and incorporating eco-friendly features such as thermal insulation, rainwater collection, and solar panels. The farmhouse now operates efficiently, with hot water and heating provided by a biomass furnace and waste water treated for irrigation.

Harmonizing with Nature

The farmhouse seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, with stone walls providing thermal insulation and the pergola adorned with wisteria to control sunlight. The restoration reflects a commitment to preserving the environment and optimizing the use of local resources.

Preserving Heritage, Creating Memories

As the restoration nears completion, the farmhouse stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of family traditions and the timeless appeal of rural living. With its blend of historic charm and modern amenities, it is poised to become a cherished destination for generations to come.
